ROUTES

Round The Struie

Leaving Alness head north on the A9 to Calrossie roundabout ,take the first junction off the roundabout and keep going north to Tain. Here you can either head in through Tain or carry on along the A9 to the Dornoch bridge roundabout. At the roundabout take the first junction and head along the old A9 through Edderton and on until you come to the junction at the bottom of the Struie viewpoint.Turn onto the A836 and the road starts to climb up the longest climb of the route. The first mile takes you through the trees to a narrow bridge .Just beyond the bridge the road climbs sharply round a bend then continues for about 2 miles up past the veiwpoint. On a clear day the views make the climb worthwhile.

Once over the climb the road opens up across open moorland which can be prone to crosswinds depending on the weather.Carry on past Aultnamain and over the first cattlegrid then downhill over second cattlegrid and past Strathrory Quarry, follow the road across the bridge and up a short climb and along through Stittenham and into Ardross.Keep on the A836 until you come to the Y junction at the top of Newbridge, take the left fork and blast downhill round Millcraig corners and past the golf course and back into Alness to finish.   Total distance 39 miles.
